OUR PASSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN EVERYTHING WE DO.

From promoting eco-friendly travel to cultivating fresh produce in our community allotment, sustainability is the green thread that weaves through all our efforts at Spinningfields. We’re always exploring innovative ways to make a difference, whether big or small. Curious to see what’s happening right in your neighbourhood? Discover the top 5 ways we’re championing sustainability.

Did you know that Spinningfields is home to over 150 species of plants and trees? Each one is a gem in our green crown. When a weather-damaged tree needed saving in Hardman Square, we called in Manchester wood carving artist Karl Macauley. He transformed the trunk into a stunning carving of Manchester Worker Bees, our city’s emblem for over 150 years.

Let’s talk trash! Our bins at Spinningfields are anything but ordinary—they’re really smart! These solar-powered waste compactors can hold up to 5x more waste than a regular bin, resulting in up to 80% fewer collections and a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Over the past 12 months, our bins have been emptied 27,765 fewer times, saving 926 hours of labour and achieving a collection efficiency score of 84.3%.

THE LITTLE LOT

For those looking to rewild their soul and reconnect with nature, Spinningfields has a community patch fondly named The Little Lot. Here, volunteers lovingly cultivate everything from strawberries to kohlrabi. The fruits of their labour aren’t just for show—the harvested produce is donated to the in-house café at Back on Track, a local charity that helps people rebuild their lives after homelessness. The Little Lot is also not just a haven for our community but a home to blackbirds, butterflies and bumblebees.

ECO-CONSCIOUS TRAVEL

Teaming up with Transport for Greater Manchester, Spinningfields offers Starling Bank Bikes for hassle-free pay-as-you-go rentals, with more on the way! There are also numerous cycle pods dotted throughout Spinningfields, offering secure storage whilst promoting eco-conscious travel. And for those in need of a quick fix, our complimentary bike maintenance and repair station is stocked with essential tools like spanners, pliers, screwdrivers, a bike pump and Allen keys.

INTERCEPTING FOOD WASTE

Score discounted end-of-day “magic bags” from retailers like Bagel Factory, Greggs, and Hey Little Cupcake as part of the ‘Too Good To Go’ which intercepts food waste, feeding bellies not bins! In addition, the People’s History Museum, Open Kitchen uses surplus ingredients to craft seasonal menus, intercepting 11.5 tonnes of food from landfill in just one month!
