‘OTHER’: A FREE OUTDOOR ART EXHIBITION AT SPINNINGFIELDS

HAPPY PRIDE, LOVE SPINNINGFIELDS

In celebration of Manchester Pride, Spinningfields is delighted to partner with Smolensky Gallery to present a captivating FREE outdoor art exhibition titled ‘OTHER’. This exhibition, running from Friday 23 August to Sunday 6 October, explores queer artistry in Manchester, showcasing the diverse ways in which the queer spirit is expressed through artistic output.

The ‘OTHER’ exhibition can be found across two vibrant locations within Spinningfields: Crown Square and The Avenue. Stroll through these areas to experience the striking works of 16 artworks by five prominent Manchester-based artists:

Smart Barnett (@smart_barnett) creates bold and provocative pieces at the intersection of textiles and digital art, using embroidery to convey personal and intimate dimensions.

Florence Burns (@flossburns.art) is a freelance artist specialising in digital illustration, moving image, and graphic design. Florence’s work focuses on stories that centre queer and disabled individuals, drawing from their own experiences.

Jez Dolan (@jezdolan) explores intersections between queerness, sexuality, identity and memory through a multi-platform practice that includes drawing, performance, printmaking and painting.

Asche Escher (@ashes_estorie) is renowned for their fashion photography and performance art. Asche’s work blends artistic vision with social commentary, transcending traditional boundaries.

Evita Ziemele (@evita_ziemele) focuses on abstractions of the human body using oil medium, particularly exploring femininity through the female gaze.

Curated by Joe Wilson, owner of Smolensky Gallery, the exhibition highlights the celebration of queer artistry and challenges the modern public to move from ‘toleration’ to genuine celebration. This exhibition embodies Smolensky Gallery’s commitment to making art accessible and enjoyable for all, and reflects their mission to spotlight and celebrate marginalised voices within the art world.
