MEET THE BARISTA BEHIND THE BREW
We had the pleasure of chatting with Abbie, one of the talented baristas at 92 Degrees in Spinningfields, to discover what makes this coffee shop a local favourite and a must-visit destination for coffee lovers.
From her top coffee recommendations to tips on brewing the perfect cup at home, here’s what you need to know about 92 Degrees.
Q. If you could recommend one unique coffee blend from 92 Degrees that everyone should try, which would it be and why?
A. Definitely the Penar Roja. It’s a delicious chocolate-hazelnut blend. I love it, especially in a mocha. It enhances the chocolatey notes beautifully. You can enjoy it with any drink, but an iced Americano is also really nice.
Q. Is there a little-known fact about 92 Degrees that might surprise people?
A. 92 Degrees is named after the temperature at which the coffee is brewed.
Q. What types of beans do you use for your filter coffees?
A. It varies. We rotate through different options. Often, we use the California calling beans. The filter coffee brings out the distinct tastes and undertones of the beans, which is really enjoyable.
Q. What’s the secret to crafting the perfect flat white coffee?
A. Start by adding the espresso to the cup so it gets a little foam on top. Then, steam the milk using a whirlpool technique in the jug to create silky hot milk. Pour the milk into the cup in a swirling motion, and finish with your coffee art.
Q. Is it better to use a drip coffee maker or a French press?
A. I would say the French press. The process feels quite refined and personally, I love the taste of coffee brewed with a French press much better.
Q. What’s your signature latte art?
A. Probably a tulip! This is my go-to. I also love creating a heart. I’m a bit of a coffee snob, so I always strive to out-do myself. I’m currently working on mastering a swan, though I’m not quite there yet! I’m sure I’ll get there eventually.
Q. What’s the most complex order you’ve ever received?
A. In a previous job, someone asked for a one-shot decaf and one-shot caffeinated, half oat milk and half coconut milk flat white. I thought to myself, “Are you joking?!” but I couldn’t help but laugh. You’ve got to enjoy it.
Q. Do you have a favourite coffee bean or blend? What makes it special?
A. I would go with our Hope Street blend. It’s the one we use for all of our coffees, and it’s currently in the grinder. It’s a well-rounded blend that’s not too strong or overpowering. It has a really nice dark taste and has received the most compliments.
Q. Syrups, yay or nay?
A. Yay. I used to be against them, but after discovering our caramel flat white, I am now a big fan.
Q. Do you have any tips for brewing a great cup of coffee at home?
A. As long as you have good coffee beans, you can’t go wrong. Regardless of how you prefer your coffee, good beans make all the difference.
Q. What menu item is the perfect accompaniment to a coffee at 92 Degrees?
A. The Pain au chocolat is an absolute classic.
